Building and Keeping the Right Team: A Workforce Day for Managers

For managers of children's homes and supported accommodation: recruitment, development, retention and workforce planning
About this Event

The workforce is the single biggest factor in the quality of care children experience in residential and supported accommodation settings. It is also where the sector is currently under the most pressure.

Agency reliance is up. Registered manager candidates are increasingly hard to find. Retention is harder than it has been for years. Ofsted is asking more searching questions about who you employ, how you recruited them and how you developed them once they were in post.

This is a day built for managers who are dealing with all of that, every week.

About the day

This is a focused training and networking day for managers of children's homes and supported accommodation, looking at staffing from end to end. The morning is content led, with input from me drawing on more than thirty five years of frontline, leadership and regulatory experience in the sector. The afternoon is more interactive, giving you structured time to share workforce development practice with other managers in the room and to take ideas back to your own setting.

You will not be sitting passively all day. You will leave with practical tools, a clearer view of what good workforce practice looks like under current regulatory expectations and a network of peers you can stay in touch with afterwards.

What we will cover

  • Safer recruitment in practice, including what Ofsted actually looks for at fit person interview and during inspection
  • How to recruit suitable staff and not just compliant staff, including values based recruitment, diversity and the role of lived experience in the workforce
  • Induction, supervision, training and career pathways from support worker through to manager and Responsible Individual
  • Retention, staff wellbeing and reducing agency dependency
  • The workforce data you should be tracking and what it is telling you
  • Workforce development planning, with structured peer sharing in the afternoon

Who it is for

  • Registered managers of children's homes
  • Managers of supported accommodation settings
  • Deputy managers stepping up into registered manager roles
  • Responsible Individuals who want to refresh their workforce strategy
