About this Event

We are delighted to announce a special event featuring the Venerable Morawaka Dhammarakkhitha, who will share his insights on the significance of the Buddhist faith in these challenging times. This event is generously hosted by Rev Neil Gardner and will take place at the Harry Younger Hall, just off the Canongate.

In a world where national Hinduism is growing in India and conflicts between Islam and Judaism persist in the Middle East, this is a timely opportunity to reflect on the teachings of one of the world’s other great religions. The Asia Scotland Institute is honoured to host this event and hopes that you will join us. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Canongate Kirk.

Our Speaker, the Venerable Morawaka Dhammarakkhitha, was born in Sri Lanka and educated at the University of Peradeniya. He now resides in Glasgow and serves as a chaplain at the University of Strathclyde.

In his own words: -

I’m Rev. Morawaka Dhammarakkhitha and I’ve been a Theravada Buddhist monk for twelve years. I’m originally from Sri Lanka and am now staying in Scotland’s Buddhist Vihara, Glasgow as a minister of religion. This is the first ever Theravada Buddhist Vihara in Scotland. During my 12-years monkhood, I was educated at Buddhist monastic institutions, and I have a BA Honours in Buddhist Studies and a PhD. I’ve been leading weekend Buddhist classes for children in Dhamma schools for over ten years and, as a Buddhist Chaplain, I’ve been very involved in activities such as delivering Buddhist teachings and leading meditation retreats based on mindfulness (Samatha and Vipassanā). I’ve worked in two Buddhist monastic institutions as a Buddhist Chaplain and been a lecturer in the field of Buddhist Studies in Sri Lanka, so I feel very much at home as a Buddhist Chaplain at Strathclyde. I conduct mindful meditation sessions and teach a course called 'Introduction to Buddhism'. I look forward very much to meeting you."

Join us for an enlightening evening that promises to offer a deeper understanding of Buddhism and its relevance today.
