About this Event
White Noise Theatre presents House Rules Blending comedy with absurdism, House Rules follows one duo dealing with the pressures of being women in various social settings. The show moves between a restaurant, club and office setting. Dealing with these issues in an absurdist and non-naturalistic way, House Rules asks the questions of how conformity affects our identity and who enforces these pre-determined ‘rules’? As they navigate these feelings of being out of place, they grapple with discovering these new social norms that are completely unfamiliar to them.
Initially convinced with the idea of wanting to subvert audience expectations of a space, House Rules places the audience in the middle of the environment and makes them more than spectators. We wanted to do this to really immerse the audience in the story we were telling. Inspired by companies like Punchdrunk and Collab Theatre, we were fascinated by the way these companies pushed the boundaries of immersive theatre and how the audience interacted with them. More specifically with House Rules we were keen to explore the idea of class, race, gender and social status in particular settings.
Juhi Kumra and Amelia Kohn met at Brunel University where they both studied theatre. Both have a passion for seeing and creating new theatre and were driven by the urge to explore the ideas that they had just scratched the surface of more in depth beyond university. Specifically enjoying the more absurdism and beyond naturalistic elements of theatre, they want to bring this to their company with thought provoking and engaging pieces.
