The work of BRUINE exists in the space between concert and sound installation: In their performance, accordionist Emilie Škrijelj, percussionist Tom Malmendier and clarinetist Michael Thieke experiment with an even more plastic form of sound material. It is a question of extending the instruments using several loudspeakers of different natures, like the diffusers of the Ondes Martenot, chosen and manufactured to color, alter and filter the instruments. Each instrument will be connected to several loudspeakers placed into the objects on the floor. The loudspeaker device offers different distinct listening points which disturb the acoustic/amplified relationship according to the disposition of the listener causing effects of multiphony, fragmentation and saturation. Diffusers as well as musicians will have to be mobile to inhabit the space in its volume and its different planes.

• The French accordionist Emilie Škrijelj explores her instrument in its smallest folds and uses it both as a percussion instrument and a generator of electroacoustic materials. Inspired by her research around the turntable, modular synths and field recording, she brings the accordion to the abstract territory of electronics by manipulating the bellows, rubbing its contours and exploring its extremities. In 2020, she founded the label eux sæm together with drummer Tom Malmendier, which is dedicated to improvised and experimental music.
• Tom Malmendier is a Belgian drummer and improvisational artist who has developed his own extremely open approach in the experimental music scene. He combines free improvisation with performance, dance and other interdisciplinary formats. Together with accordionist Emilie Škrijelj, he founded the label eux sæm, on which many of his projects are released. Malmendier’s work is characterised by the search for new sonic spaces, the significance of human encounters and uncompromising exploration beyond stylistic boundaries.
• The Berlin-based clarinetist/composer/performer Michael Thieke is equally at home across a broad range of musical environments, such as experimental song forms, collectively composing projects, improvising collectives, and music on the fringes of jazz. He is exploring the minutiae of sound, timbre and noise, with a particular interest in microtonality and related sound phenomena. The qualities of slowness are another field of his research. He has a preference for long-term collaborations and collective work.
