About this Event
Keeping the Greenway clean and green for tens of thousands of people who cycle, run, walk, stroll, skate, scoot (and other modes!) isn’t easy! But with your help, together we can keep the Greenway litter-free and enjoyable for all! This spring join BGI staff and gardeners to steward the Naval Cemetery Landscape and adjacent Greenway and street tree pits! Learn about what it takes to steward a native meadow and keep our greenways green with guided weeding and area clean-up. Participants can also participate in the City Nature Challenge (show us your submitted nature observation from the site and get a free science kit!) and see the new art from local artist and 2023 NCL Artist Resident Jessica Dalrymple. Speakers TBD but the volunteer work will be the main event at this a celebration of this resilient landscape!
Learn about the Naval Cemetery Landscape (NCL) and the Greenway and what goes into maintaining their beauty and accessibility for everyone! The Naval Cemetery landscape is fully operated and made open as a public space by BGI through the generosity of our supporters.
BGI will guide volunteers in identification and targeted removal of invasive species in the Naval Cemetery Landscape as well as street tree stewardship, including weeding and aerating tree pits and removing trash from the tree pits and the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway.
The event will be Saturday, April 20, 10:00-12:30 pm. Registration is required.
Meet fellow community members, Greenway users, and a broad cross-section of Brooklynites who want to make a difference in our city! Tasks will include picking up litter and maintaining tree pits and perimeter areas of the Naval Cemetery Landscape. BGI will provide necessary tools . We encourage you to bring your own gloves, otherwise gloves will also be available on site. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and sign a participant waiver. Wearing sunscreen and sun hat, comfortable clothing in layers (Weather can be unpredictable in spring. We will work in light rain and only cancel if heavy rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast), and bringing a water bottle and snacks is recommended (no water on site).
