About this Event

This introduction to borosilicate glass class will focus on using clear and colored solid rods to explore sculpting botanical shapes. This will start from the foundations of cutting and shaping rod which will progress into the joining of different parts in order to create a larger sculpture. Students will utilize color and layering in order to render botanical shapes with more scientific accuracy.

What to Expect:

All my beginner students have a great time shaping borosilicate for the first time and creating their first flower with me! Some students come with a particular species of plant or flower in mind but student’s can create whatever shape they want based on the techniques they learn through the demonstration. The class will be an even split of demonstration and practice time. We will start with basic shaping and cutting techniques as well as the layering of colors in order to create the texture of leaves and various plant parts. The class will also cover the basic principle of building glass bridges in order to join glass plant parts together. Students will be able to take home their very own glass sculpture inspired by nature by the end of the glass.

Flameworking requires a little practice at heat control with the torch to create successful pieces. After demonstrations, expect to make some successful objects in this class, and a couple failures, while gaining more confidence and skill in the studio. Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.

Flameworking can involve a mix of seated and standing activities, including working with glass rods and torches. The environment can be bright and loud at times. Handling glass and tools may require a certain level of dexterity.  To learn more about accessibility the Accessibility page on our website.

Eligibility: No previous experience required. Open to ages 14 and up.

Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.

We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date of class. Contact our Registrar of Education, Ari Eshoo, at if you have questions about the class or would like to arrange a payment plan.
