Featuring: Annabelle Plum (voice), Marek Kimei Matvija (shakuhachi), Simone Baron (accordion), Adam Robinson (shakuhachi).
Program length: 90 minut
Breathe the Sound presents an evening of traditional Japanese honkyoku repertoire alongside contemporary compositions for shakuhachi and voice. The program bridges centuries-old Zen flute meditation pieces with modern works that expand the sonic possibilities of breath, bamboo, and the human voice. The program includes Shika no Tone, Echigo Reibo, Kaligrafie pro hlas a bambus, Whale Song, and Chikurai Goshō.
Shakuhachi performer and filmmaker Marek Kimei Matvija — a certified natori shihan of the Kifū-kai tradition and artistic director of the International Shakuhachi Festival Prague — brings both deep lineage and a contemporary sensibility to the stage. He is joined by vocalist Annabelle Plum, whose work explores extended vocal techniques and experimental timbre at the intersection of contemporary music and improvisation.
Together with New York–based musicians Simone Baron and Adam Robinson, the performers create a focused and immersive soundscape that moves between ritual austerity and contemporary expression. Selected works are accompanied by subtle visual elements, shaping a contemplative performance environment.
