THE TALK: From the Mitochondria with Love - Bioenergetic Factors in Healthy Aging & Disease
Mitochondria play a central role in maintaining cellular health by regulating energy production, metabolic signaling, and stress responses. Increasing evidence suggests that age-related mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to the development of many chronic diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders, metabolic disease, and cardiovascular conditions. Declines in mitochondrial bioenergetic capacity, impaired quality control, and increased oxidative stress can disrupt cellular homeostasis and accelerate biological aging.
This lecture will explore the role of mitochondrial dysfunction as a key driver of aging and disease, highlighting how changes in mitochondrial bioenergetics influence cellular resilience, tissue function, and systemic health. We will discuss emerging insights into how mitochondrial pathways regulate longevity and how their disruption contributes to disease progression. Finally, the presentation will examine promising therapeutic opportunities aimed at restoring mitochondrial function, improving bioenergetic capacity, and promoting healthy aging.
Dr. Heckmann is the Co-founder, President & Chief Scientific Officer of Asha Therapeutics. In addition to his commercial activities, he holds academic professorships in Molecular Medicine and Medical Engineering at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine and USF Health Neuroscience Institute. His academic laboratory studies the regulation of neuroinflammation and neurodegeneration resulting from aberrant bioenergetic regulation in diseases including Parkinson’s, ALS, and Alzheimer’s Disease. He serves as an advisor to multiple pharmaceutical and biotech companies and research foundations, including MJFF. He received his doctoral degree in molecular biology and biochemistry from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine & Science.
