Miller was a student in Oberlin during the Oberlin-Wellington Slave Rescue and later fought along Antietam's Bloody Lane, being put in charge of hundreds of captured Rebel soldiers. After being captured and released, Miller led the mini-charge within the overall Pickett's Charge at the Battle of Gettysburg where he almost lost his life. He later became the long-term secretary of the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
