// A book discussion with film excerpts // From Sites to Sights of Memory: Why do we turn to Cinema? And how has Egyptian cinema documented, and at times shaped, our relationship to space, memory, and identity?
Join us on Sunday, May 3rd، for an evening around the book “Why Cinema? Reading Heritage and Urban Identity in Egyptian Films”, in the presence of co-editor and urban researcher Taher Abdel Ghani. Moving between the book and the screen, the evening brings together selected chapters alongside clips from iconic Egyptian films that capture Cairo across time. Together, they open up a way of looking at the city-how it’s filmed, collectively remembered, and continuously reshaped across different moments in time.
Edited by Taher Abdel Ghani and Omar Zahran, and published by Dar Al Maraya, the book is a collaborative research project bringing together 15 contributors, working across cinema, architecture, and urban design. Copies of the book will be available during the event. Special thanks to Dar Al Maraya.

About the speakers:
Taher Abdel Ghani (present on the day): Architect, urban researcher, and assistant lecturer at New Giza University. An award-winning independent filmmaker and advisory board member at City Space Architecture. His work focuses on the intersections of cinema, the city, and public space.
Omar Zahran: Architect, urban designer, and researcher at Politecnico di Milano, and founder of “Reviving Heritage and Arts – Reviving Egypt.” His work bridges architecture and cinema as tools to document, preserve, and reimagine heritage. He also led “The City on Screen,” a project exploring the relationship between moving image and urban identity.

لماذا نلجأ إلى السينما؟ وكيف ساهمت الأفلام المصرية في توثيق وأحيانًا تشكيل علاقتنا بالمكان، والذاكرة، والهوية؟
يسعدنا دعوتكم يوم الأحد ٣ مايو لأمسية حول كتاب "السينما..ليه؟ قراءة في التراث والهوية العمرانية في السينما المصرية"، وذلك بحضور أحد محرريه، الباحث العمراني طاهر عبد الغني
تتنقّل الأمسية بين الكتاب والشاشة، من خلال مقتطفات مختارة من الكتاب ومشاهد من أفلام مصرية ترصد القاهرة عبر مراحل مختلفة. تفتح هذه المواد طريقة للنظر إلى المدينة، كيف تُصوَّر، وكيف تُتذكَّر، وكيف يعاد تشكيلها باستمرار.
تُعقد الفعالية باللغة العربية، ويتبعها نقاش مفتوح مع الحضور
الكتاب من تحرير طاهر عبد الغني وعمر زهران، وصادر عن دار المرايا. ويضم مساهمات ١٥ باحثًا/ة من تخصصات مختلفة تربط بين السينما، والعمارة، والتصميم العمراني. تتوافر نسخ من الكتاب خلال الفعالية

عن المشاركين
طاهر عبد الغني (حاضر خلال الفعالية): معماري وباحث عمراني، ومحاضر مساعد بجامعة نيو جيزة. مخرج مستقل حائز على جوائز، وعضو استشاري بمؤسسة City Space Architecture. تتركز أعماله حول تقاطعات السينما والمدينة والفضاءات العامة.
عمر زهران: معماري ومصمم عمراني وباحث بجامعة بوليتيكنيكو ميلانو، ومؤسس مبادرة «إحياء للتراث والفنون – إحياء مصر». يعمل على الربط بين السينما والعمارة كوسيلتين لتوثيق التراث وحفظه وإعادة تخيّله، وقاد مشروع «المدينة على الشاشة» الذي يستكشف العلاقة بين الصورة السينمائية والهوية العمرانية
