Born July 23, 1899, Ruth Ellis was thought to be the oldest "out" African American lesbian. Her story offers a rare opportunity to experience a century of our history as lived by one inspiring woman. Ellis passed away on October 5, 2000, at the age of 101.
The screening will be followed by a Special Learning Session entitled Personal Storytelling as Archiving with the filmmaker.
Yvonne Welbon is an award-winning filmmaker and the founder and CEO of the Chicago-based non-profit Sisters in Cinema. In this Special Learning Session, Yvonne Welbon will discuss the importance and power of preserving histories, the process, responsibility, and the practice of archiving.
