About the event:
Bodmin Jail requires little introduction, as it is infamous across the UK for its dark history of incarceration, torture, and execution. Established in the late 18th century, this notorious establishment has become a grim symbol of justice gone awry, where the lives of many were cut short, and their spirits seemingly tethered to the very walls that once confined them. The jail, with its imposing stone structure and foreboding presence, serves as a stark reminder of a time when the penal system was often brutal and unforgiving.
What remains today serves as a chilling reminder of the Georgian and Victorian eras, periods marked by severe crime and even harsher punishments. The jail was built in the mid-1700s and underwent multiple expansions due to severe overcrowding, reflecting the turbulent social conditions of the era.
Between 1785 and the early 1900s, it is reported that 55 prisoners were executed on the gallows within these walls, with the final execution being that of William Hampton, a name that still resonates in local history.
Bodmin Jail is said to be home to numerous restless spirits who remain trapped within its confines, still protesting their innocence from beyond the grave. Visitors and ghost hunters alike have reported chilling experiences, with deathly screams and pleading voices reverberating through the old cells, creating an atmosphere thick with tension and unease.
Dark, menacing shadows flit across the walls, and the sound of rattling keys—believed to belong to the long-departed jailer—can still be heard echoing through the corridors of the old jail. These auditory phenomena contribute to the overall sense of dread that envelops the location, making it a prime spot for those seeking a genuine encounter with the paranormal.
In the naval wing of the jail, intriguing phenomena have been reported during past ghost hunts, particularly when participants have spoken French, leading to some surprisingly intelligent responses from the spirits. There have even been instances of stones being mysteriously thrown from the upper cells, adding an element of unpredictability and thrill to the investigations.
Here are just a few of the spirits who are known to remain incarcerated within the walls of Bodmin Jail, each with their own tragic story that adds to the haunting narrative of the site:
Matthew Weeks - Executed in 1844 for the brutal murder of his lover, Charlotte Dymond, his spirit is said to wander the jail, filled with remorse and despair.
Selina Wadge - Hanged in 1887 for the shocking murder of her younger disabled son, her story is one of heartbreak and tragedy, leaving a lingering sadness in her wake.
William and James Lightfoot - Both hanged for the murder of Nevell Norway, their spirits are believed to still roam the prison grounds, forever marked by the sins of their past.
Anne Jefferies - A tragic figure, Anne was left to starve to death as she steadfastly refused to admit to being a witch. Her spirit is said to roam the jail, a testament to the injustice she suffered.
An unnamed prostitute - Wrongfully executed, her spirit is believed to linger in the shadows, a reminder of the grave injustices faced by those marginalized by society.
Based on many experiences, a ghost hunt at Bodmin Jail is not for the timid. The eerie atmosphere, coupled with the haunting tales associated with this location, offers an experience that is both exciting and profoundly disturbing. Consider yourself warned—those who choose to enter must be ready to face the unknown and the restless spirits that dwell in the shadows.
