🔥 SPECIAL AND NEW PATH FORMULA 🔥
This year we’re taking you on a deep dive into the rich roots of blues dance with two unique learning paths – blues journeys – specially designed to guide you through the history and culture of the two core branches of blues: Ballroomin' and Jookin'.
Both paths will be open level*, our amazing teachers (Kelsy&Damon) will tailor the classes to the group, so that dancers of all levels feel supported and challenged. No matter how far you are in your blues journey, this format invites you to go deeper, give more meaning to your dance, and understand the "why" behind it.
*basic requirements: familiarity with blues aesthetics and Close Embrace connection.
BALLROOMIN’ PATH
4 hours of couple dance + 1 hour of solo
The Great Migration: Blues Dance in the Ballroom
In this path we'll explore the various Blues dances that were created in dance halls and ballrooms from the Delta, Northeast, and Midwest, learning what makes them similar and different and how to put them in our bodies. We'll emphasize the African American Blues aesthetic in each to keep from straying too much into the Ballroom aesthetic that so many dancers of every level struggle with.

JOOKIN’ PATH
4 hours of couple dance + 1 hour of solo
The Get Down: From the Back 40 to 140th St
In this path we'll explore the close-in blues dances created in the backyards and jook joints of the south through the rent parties of Chicago and Harlem. Characterized by low postures, spinal articulation and expressive hips or feet these dances bop, roll, groove, and pop. We'll focus on the artistry and technique to help you gain increased ability and confidence in the covered dances.
