Beechwoods. Bluebells. Layers of fabric and stitch. We’re so excited to welcome wonderful textile artist Kate Findlay to Where Inspiration Blooms for this beautiful, nature-inspired fabric landscape workshop.
In this one-day class, suitable for absolute beginners and experienced stitchers alike, you’ll create a small textile landscape inspired by the beechwoods and bluebell-filled Chiltern countryside around Penn Street. Working on a carefully chosen fabric background (provided by Kate), you’ll build your scene layer by layer — adding tree trunks, branches, leaves and drifts of bluebells using fabric, stitch and texture.
You’ll explore:
• Creating depth and composition through layered fabrics
• Adding intricate detail with stitch (by hand or machine)
• Using the “confetti” technique — tiny fabric pieces fused and stitched for wonderfully atmospheric effects
• Combining colour and texture to capture woodland light
Your finished piece will measure approximately 45cm x 30cm — a unique stitched celebration of spring that you’ll be proud to hang at home.
Some materials are provided (including felt backing, bonding materials and selected fabrics), but please check the “what to bring” list carefully before booking — especially if you’d like to use your own sewing machine or favourite woodland-toned fabrics. Hand stitching is very welcome, so a sewing machine isn’t essential.
Expect a relaxed, inspiring day immersed in fabric, creativity and the beauty of the British countryside — with plenty of tea and homemade cake from local favourites Two Spoons to keep you fuelled.
If you’ve been dreaming of stitching something rooted in nature, this is your invitation.
