A Tribute to Toots Thielemans
Chromatic harmonica maestro PHIL HOPKINS presents tonight’s programme which features the music of Toots Thielemans (1922-2016) who was the greatest jazz harmonica player of all time. He worked with icons such as Benny Goodman, George Shearing, Charlie Parker, Quincy Jones, Paul Simon and Billy Joel. In tonight’s programme (endorsed by Toots himself), Phil leads the band on a musical journey from Thielemans’ Belgian roots via New York to Brazil, his movie soundtracks including Midnight Cowboy (1969) and The Sugarland Express (1974) and, of course, his famous Sesame Street theme. Expect swinging classics such as ‘Bluesette’ and lively tales about the life and times of the man who brought the chromatic harmonica into the mainstream of jazz.
Phil Hopkins is an internationally renowned chromatic harmonica player and percussionist. He has appeared in numerous film, television and theatre productions including From Here to Eternity, Porgy and Bess at the Savoy Theatre, and the UK premiere of Assassins.
Phil has performed as harmonica soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta and has contributed to numerous recordings. His international appearances include performances at Carnegie Hall, Symphony Hall Boston, The London Palladium, Tokyo Globe Theatre and the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza.
