About us
What is a ‘bloco’ you ask? Well, in Brazil, blocos are groups of people who get together to play music - mainly drums - and work towards Carnival each year. The blocos perform in the streets of the cities and towns where they’re based. Blocos are an open, inclusive and non-competitive environment. Carnival in Brazil - and in South America in general - is a yearly season of festivities happening in February and March where the streets are filled with parties, live music, art, dancing and general merriment. Communities work year round towards this season of a few weeks.
You might be familiar with samba bands, which exist all over the UK, Europe and the world over. Many of the groups in the UK are percussion and dance focussed, which is where we differentiate ourselves. We offer the unique experience of a large percussion section with a band of musicians who will be playing both iconic Brazilian songs, as well as songs you’ll have in your party playlists. At Bloco Dandara you can hear us playing Ariana Grande, BaianaSystem, Oasis, Beth Carvalho, Nirvana and everything in between - all with authentic Brazilian grooves and Scottish enthusiasm.
