brilliance, courage, and creativity of Black Women.
About this Event
This Black History Month, GLIDE presents She Carried Us Forward, an evening honoring the brilliance, courage, creativity, and enduring leadership of Black women across the civil rights movement - then and now.
All too often, the achievements of Black women that carry us forward as a society are erased by history. When we write Black Women back into the history books, we not only honor our ancestors, we inspire generations to come.
That’s why we are honored to welcome Michelle Browder, acclaimed artist, activist, historian, and founder of the Mothers of Gynecology in Montgomery, Alabama. Michelle’s groundbreaking work restores voice and dignity to Black women whose lives transformed the fields of medicine, justice, and liberation - yet were historically erased.
Michelle is leading a movement to take down a monument to the white scientist who tortured Black women for medical knowledge—and has erected a monument to the Black women whose bodies were sacrificed. She is currently mobilizing support for the Mothers of Gynecology Health and Wellness Clinic, which provides reproductive freedom resources, prenatal care, doulas, midwives, OB-GYNs, postpartum depression support, and other resources to address the maternal health crisis.
Michelle will join Dr. Gina Fromer, GLIDE’s CEO and lifelong racial equity champion, in a powerful conversation moderated by Naeemah Charles, Senior Director of GLIDE’s Center for Social Justice, whose work bridges grassroots advocacy, healing-centered leadership, and transformational learning. Come learn from them how the 3 R’s-- reckoning, repenting, and repairing racist history— can transform America today.
Together, they will explore:
• the legacy of Black women who shaped the civil rights movement,
• how art, healing, and activism reclaim historical truth,
• the ongoing fight for bodily autonomy and health equity,
• how joy, creativity, and community continue to sustain Black women leading change today.
This will be an evening of history, uplift, celebration, and collective love for the women who carried us—and those still carrying us forward.
