Black Girls Hike

Black Girls Hike was founded in 2019 to tackle the lack of inclusion and representation of Black Women in outdoor spaces. We work to to increase participation in a range of activities from hiking, to watersports, and training opportunities working in the Outdoor Sector. We work with Black/Mixed Race cis and trans women and non-binary people of Black African and / or Caribbean descent aged 18 +
Our core values are inclusion, community and education. We host nationwide group hikes, activity weekenders and international trips, providing a safe and welcoming space for women to connect with nature and each other, therefore improving their sense of wellbeing and empowerment. We work with the wider outdoor community to help them develop services and projects to meet the needs of our community by providing more opportunities for them to engage in outdoor activities.

How will you use the funding raised at our Black Funding Network Spring Funder?

The purpose of us applying for this funding is to enable us to host an event that will bring together a range of diverse people and communities so that they can explore diversity in the outdoors and celebrate the natural environment through a range of talks, activities and workshops. We are keen to bring people together for a 3 day camping event that will challenge the lack of representation in outdoor spaces and inspire people of colour to access the natural environment through a range of inspiring workshops, guest speakers and hikes in the local area. Our aim is to also increase a positive sense of wellbeing by engaging in activities in nature that allow for contemplation, reflection and celebration of our diverse communities.
The funding will be used to provide a subsidised 3 day camping event for up to 95 people. Food and accommodation will be provided courtesy of Green & Away as well as use of their site and all facilities. We will also use a portion of the funds for the organisation and coordination of the event. A portion of the funds will also cover guest speakers fees and any workshop costs.

Black SEN Mamas CIC

Our work recognises the intersectional challenges faced by a number of black families within the SEND community and aims to address these issues through a culturally sensitive and empowering approach.

Fundamentally, SEN Mamas CIC is a space that invites and supports personalisation, empowerment and shared decision making.

Mothers have access to the SEN Mamas Advocacy & Involvement Support Services, the Mindful Mamas mental health support programmes and the SEN Mamas Training Programmes for Parents and Professionals.

Our services are delivered by volunteer (Mama Reps) SEND mothers who have lived experiences of the nuances faced such as systemic racism, discrimination, and cultural biases within the SEN system, which can impact their ability to access appropriate support and services for their children and themselves.

We provide our community of mothers with a space where they can share their experiences, learn from each other, and advocate for their children's needs.

SEN Mamas CIC provides a range of programmes and services that contribute towards boosting SEND mothers self-esteem, mental health and wellbeing.

Through engaging with our community of mothers, we aim to enhance support available to special needs families, in turn, this helps them to manage and navigate aversive situations, commonly faced in the wider community.

They are better able to assess and manage these social issues, be less anxious and ultimately, better integrate into society. We are currently supporting over 2,000 Black SEND families.

We just finished off a research report surrounding the SEND provision and support given to Black SEND families, whereby the main participants were the families we support. We also held the first Black SEND child conference whereby these findings were presented.

Please describe the project funding from our Black Funding Network Spring Funder will support:

The Mindful Mamas Programme (runs over a 6-8 week period):
SEN mamas offers counselling programmes, wellness sessions, psychotherapy led workshops, support groups and various therapeutic interventions; all aimed at helping empower the mums to identify their own mental health needs, when and how to seek appropriate support, as well as the tools and resources to aid, in improving their mental health, commonly faced in the wider community. They are better able to assess and manage these social issues, be less anxious and ultimately, better integrate into society.

Street2Boardroom CIC

Imagine this:
If young people and adults who find themselves caught up in a range of illegal activities could believe that they could achieve greatness.
Giving them the knowledge and confidence to apply what they have learnt from the streets – to learn the legal hustle.
It’s not where you come from that counts, it’s where you’re going.
Street2Boardroom was born in 2016, when founder, Clayton Planter recognised that the current system repeatedly rejected certain types of people; preventing them from reaching their full potentials, from finding positive role models that they could genuinely relate to and ultimately re-joining society.
We guide former offenders and teach them how to use their street skills to build a new start.
We help people who have engaged in street crime to excel in business and wider society. We do this by mentoring them to set up a business alone successfully, as well as introducing them to corporate jobs within a range of business sectors.
As well as this, we inspire young, hard-to-reach kids to earn money legally. Our networking events bridge two worlds and open up career opportunities to develop local inclusion within Bristol
We may seem the crazy ones, but in a crazy world, we are the sane genius who dare to disrupt the status quo. We believe that societies and communities work best when people are true to themselves and are free to express —because if we were all the same, we would never evolve. Everybody, regardless of background, has greatness within; it’s time to start unlocking that. It’s about inclusion, as well as diversity.

Please describe the projects funding from our Black Funding Network Spring Funder will support:

Learn The Legal Hustle: Our 4-week business course is designed for people (18+) who find themselves caught up in illegal activities looking to transfer their skills. We give them the knowledge and confidence to apply what they’ve learned from the street – to succeed in the legal hustle! The course is designed to inspire them and help them shine.
The funding would enable us to run a 4-week course working
with 12 young people
We believe Street2Boardroom concept could be national concept with your support.

About Black Funding Network

Black Funding Network seeks to disrupt the traditional view of philanthropy as centred on a wealthy elite, and instead put the original meaning of philanthropy – the love of humanity – front and centre by asking for donations of any size from those who enjoy giving in the company of others.

We host two fundraising events a year, showcasing 3 organisations at a time, either virtual or in person.

Since launching in 2020, the Black Funding Network has raised over £99,000 to aid organisations supporting the Black British community. We are the giving circle for anyone interested in uplifting the community.

Please reserve a spot or make a donation if you can’t attend - this will be evenly split among the three organisations.

If you wish to make a donation, please contact us on [email protected].
