About this Event

Start point: Glen Mary (Tom Gill) National Trust car park (Postcodes are unreliable in rural areas - the confirmation email contains precise instructions)

Length: 10km (6.2 miles) with 430m (1400ft) of ascent

Time: 4.5 hours (approx.)

Grade: 4 (see grade description below)

This walk that begins with a short climb from the car park past the Tom Gill waterfalls to the popular and picturesque Tarn Hows, followed by a walk around the tarn and on to the summit of Black Crag (322m), one of the Wainwright fells. The return route includes a section of the Cumbria Way.

Paths are generally good but there are some sections that are narrow and/or rocky and others that will be muddy in poor weather. In addition to the initial steep climb there are other features such as stiles and kissing gates on the route.

Grade 4 walks are generally full day walks that include hilly ground and require a reasonable level of fitness. You might encounter climbs up some steeper sections. The surfaces may be rough and uneven, with rocky or muddy sections, and you may also find yourself walking up irregular steps, over stiles or through narrow gates and gaps.

Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch.

Public transport: There is no public transport link to Glen Mary. The 505 bus (Kendal ⇄ Coniston via Ambleside and Hawkshead) terminates in Coniston and the Glen Mary car park is a 3.5 km walk from the village centre.

Your confirmation email will include full details - please read it carefully.
