Copper Mills and Miners [Coniston] - National Park Guided Walk

Start point: Coniston Tourist Information Centre car park

Length: 4.2km (2.6miles) with 160m (520ft) of ascent

Walk grade: 3 (see grade description below)

The walk begins in Coniston village and climbs into the Coppermines Valley past Miners Bridge and on to visit the Lower and Upper Bonsor dressing floors to discover how copper was mined and processed here. The return route to Coniston includes part of the track along which the processed copper was taken on its way to the railhead, where it was taken onward by railway.

This walk is on quarry roads and obvious paths throughout. It involves some moderate ascents and descents on metalled roads and tracks with loose surfaces. Some sections can be muddy and/or slippery in poor weather.

Grade 3 walks may include some moderate ascents and descents. The path surface might be earth, grass or stone and – while generally firm – it will have some loose or uneven sections, or be soft underfoot after rain. You will also encounter steps, gates or stiles and narrow sections. Most of our grade 3 walks are suitable for families.

Public transport: The 505 bus (Kendal ⇄ Coniston via Ambleside and Hawkshead) terminates in Coniston.
