In 2022, illustrator Don Carter (Edgar Allan Slothman) met baker turned watercolorist, Dora Dylanne Reyes. A friendship and mutual interest in each other’s art led to a very unique collaboration and pairing — birds and desserts. Don recalls, “I was working on a Florida Cormorant and was just about to put a fish in his mouth when Dora suggested something a little more interesting … a piece of black forest cheesecake. To the ornithological purist in me it made no sense at all, but it looked absolutely amazing.” Since then, the series has taken off. Don’s and Dora’s work continues to be exhibited and sold in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
Birds & Desserts is on view April 5 through April 18 in the Watson Gallery of the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center (200 Main Street, Wethersfield). The museum is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sundays, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.
During our popular “Taste of Wethersfield” fundraiser (April 11, 7pm – 9:30pm), the Watson Gallery will be open and the artists will be in attendance, offering prints and various objets d’art featuring their work for sale.
