Birding Beyond the Basics: Advancing Your Local Songbird ID

Spend an immersive bird-filled morning with us at Claremont Nature Centre and sharpen your eyes and ears. We’ve invited Shane Abernethy, Local Bird Expert & Bander in Charge at Tommy Thompson Park’s Bird Research Station, to pull back the curtain on professional birding. We’ll learn how to navigate the "tricky" parts of identification in a way that is accessible, fun, and eye-opening for every skill level.

What’s Included:

• Advanced birding techniques: fine-tune your local bird identification; learn to distinguish between similar-sounding confusing species, spot plumage abnormalities in the field, effectively scan mixed flocks to pick out rare or unusual individuals, specific morphological field marks that professionals use, and more!
• Expert-Guided Birding Walk: A relaxed but educational trek through Claremont’s beautiful habitats.
• Take-Home Conservation: Construct your own DIY Bird-Friendly Window Decals to help protect the species we study.
• Light Breakfast: Coffee/tea and light refreshments to fuel our morning adventure.

Cancelation policy: All ticket sales are final.Weather Conditions: Unless TRCA cancels an event due to low registration or inclement/adverse weather, refunds associated with weather conditions will not be issued. Event cancellations may occur due to extreme conditions such as severe snow or ice storms, extremely heavy rainfall, high winds and/or in the event of lightning or lack of power. Since most of our events are held outdoors with limited to no indoor space, please come prepared for current weather conditions. TRCA makes every effort to proceed with an event as planned and will reopen its venues as quickly as possible once inclement/ adverse weather conditions cease and the safety of our clients is not threatened. If an event is canceled by TRCA, participants will be notified, and all applicable fees will be refunded. Payments made by credit card will be credited back to the original card used for payment within 2-3 business days. Payments made by cheque or cash will be refunded by cheque in the mail, within 4 weeks.

Be Prepared

• Please dress appropriately for the weather – we will be going outside rain or shine!
• Practice tick safety – long pants and long socks are recommended.
• Comfortable footwear for walking recommended.

• Consider your own comfort - bug spray or bug clothing may be useful to you.

• Bathrooms are available onsite. We will not have access to them during the guided birding walk portion. Please plan accordingly.

• Bring a reusable water bottle and snacks, if needed.
