About this Event
Bike Racing 101
Thinking about racing your bike but not sure where to start? This workshop is for you.
Led by Sarah, Founder of London Academy and a racer with over 15 years’ racing experience, Bike Racing 101 is designed for women, trans, femme and non-binary people who are new to racing or race curious. You don’t need any racing experience to attend.
Over the evening we’ll break down what bike racing actually involves, answer your questions, and help take the fear and confusion out of getting started. It’s aimed primarily at road and closed circuit racing, but the skills and knowledge we’ll cover are useful across all cycling disciplines.
We’ll also hear from Catherine Hadfield, who started racing just a few years ago. Catherine will share her experience of taking those first steps into racing, what surprised her, what helped, and what she wishes she’d known earlier.
We will cover:
✨ The basics: What do you need to get started? Race licenses, kit, equipment, training, your quick start guide to bike racing.
✨ Races to enter: What do the categories of racing mean and how do you choose which races to enter? We’ll cover what the events are, the level they are aimed at and how to look out for races you want to do.
✨ Race training: How do you prepare for racing? Practical tips for preparation, etiquette and staying safe
✨ Planning: You’ve entered, what’s next? We’ll run through what to expect on race day and the days leading up to it
✨ Q&A: All questions welcome.
When you leave this workshop, you should:
- Have the confidence to enter your first race
- Understand how bike races work and what to expect on the day
- Have a better sense of your next steps into racing, whatever that looks like for you
After the workshop you’ll receive our quick start guide to racing. This will be sent out on email to all attendees and will give more in depth information on what we’ve covered. This is so that you can enjoy being present at the workshop and not have to take notes.
The money generated from this workshop goes towards the running costs and expenses for London Academy, including hosting more events and workshops like this.
London Academy is a women’s domestic racing team based in London, with a focus on developing riders from regional to national level in the UK. We hope to create a sustainable pathway into the sport for new racers and continue to contribute to the wider women’s cycling community by helping to get more women racing bikes.
