About this Event
Explore Gerrard Street East! Discover how a former industrial brickyard is now a hub for Toronto’s South Asian community. Learn how one of Toronto’s first Bollywood movie theatres transformed this East End neighbourhood to an international destination for South Asian culture during the 1970s and 80s.
This tour will be led by Emerging Historian Sarah Takhar.
A sweet taste of Little India!
For an additional $2 tour participants will be able to select one sweet or taste samples from a mix of popular Indian sweets from a staple Gerrard India Bazaar restaurant, Moti Mahal. Samples include gluab jamun, barfi (varied flavours), kalakand, and jalebi. All sweets are vegetarian, but please be aware sweets may contain dairy, nuts and trace amounts of wheat. To participate in the tasting, please select Indian Sweets Tasting when purchasing your tickets. Tastings will happen at the conclusion of the tour.
Start Point: Northeast Side of Greenwood Park (150 Greenwood Ave)
Our staff and volunteers will be at the tour's starting location 30 minutes prior to each tour. Please arrive at least 5-10 minutes prior to the start of the tour to allow time for check in.
End Point: East End United Church (1470 Gerrard Street East)
Length of Tour: Approximately 90 minutes
Distance and Terrain: This tour is approximately 1 kilometer in distance and takes place predominantly on paved city sidewalks and streets. There are some unpaved portions of the route that take place in city parks.
Registration is required for all tours. Please note: you will not be able to join a tour group if you have not registered ahead of time.
This tour uses individual audio headsets. All registered participants will be provided with an individual headset that will allow you to hear the tour guide throughout the tour.
