Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) is a famous silent screen star specializing in swashbucklers. His latest venture is The Dueling Cavalier in which he stars opposite Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), one of the most glamorous actresses in movies. The two are pretending to be romantically involved for publicity purposes, but in reality, Don has his eye on Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds), a chorus girl he met at a film premiere party. Then Don’s studio boss, R. F. Simpson, decides to turn The Dueling Cavalier into a talking picture. Don and his buddy, Cosmo Brown (Donald O’ Connor), come up with a plan to have Kathy sing Lina’s parts — but Don and Kathy’s budding romance creates tensions no one planned for.
Let’s not overstate our case here: Singin’ in the Rain is not heavy with plot or especially complicated in its message. But it might also be a perfect movie? As a discrete and ingestible little quantum of media, as a single bite, The Last Picture Show is like an endive leaf spread with paté and dusted with Willamette hops: cold, bitter, complicated, rewarding but an acquired taste. Whereas Singin’ in the Rain is a jalapeño popper. Not revolutionary, but pleasing to all sorts of tastes. It’s craveable. The dancing and singing are sublime, the cinematography is technically impressive as hell, and it leaves the audience with a warm afterglow. When movies are at their best, this is what they’re the best at.
