� BHS Ride Out UK – Fun Ride at Holme Lacy College! �� 28th March
Hello everyone,
My name is John Riddle‑Jones, and I’m a volunteer for the British Horse Society as an Access and Bridleway Officer.
We’re excited to be hosting a Ride Out UK fun ride at Holme Lacy College on the 28th of March. It’s a brilliant chance to enjoy a great day out while also reminding everyone how to stay safe around horses on the roads and bridle paths.
Most drivers and cyclists are fantastic, but a few key reminders help keep everyone safe:
� Horses are flight animals. They can’t always see what’s directly behind them. If you’re a cyclist approaching from the rear, please call out so the rider knows you’re there. Passing silently can make a horse think it’s being attacked, which is dangerous for all involved.
� A simple “hello” or “coming up on your right side” keeps you safe and helps the horse stay calm.
� Drivers:
Give horses 2 metres of space when overtaking.
Pass at 10 mph or less.
No need to sound your horn—just a wave or nod is perfect.
This event is also a great opportunity to remind Herefordshire Council that horses are a vital part of our county. With new housing developments and the proposed bypass, it’s essential that safe riding routes are included in future planning. Improving off‑road access and keeping horses off busy roads benefits everyone—riders, drivers, cyclists, and the wider community.
