About this Event

In collaboration with the BFI's nationwide "Too Much: Melodrama on Film" season, Theatreship presents a series of nights dedicated to getting swept away by the power of emotion on the big screen. Our season, "Never Too Much," champions the genre's unapologetic intensity, celebrating its enduring influence and emotional depth. We'll explore iconic and forgotten melodramas from around the world, inviting audiences to cast aside their cynicism and embrace the passion, drama, and glorious excess of the cinematic experience. Each film will be paired with a bespoke live performance, a talk, or a new short film, making each night a unique, immersive exploration of the genre's timeless appeal.

Wong Kar-wai's mesmerizing and futuristic melodrama is a spiritual sequel to In the Mood for Love. The film follows a cynical writer in 1960s Hong Kong who revisits his past through a series of fleeting romances, all while weaving his memories into a sci-fi novel about a futuristic train that travels to the year 2046. With a lush, dreamlike visual style and an unforgettable soundtrack, this film is a beautiful and heartbreaking exploration of memory, unfulfilled desire, and the ghosts of lost love.

The film will be followed by a screening of Director Jun Chew’s intense and futuristic melodrama “I Am Alive” (2025). In the near future, a husband decides to save his wife from a fatal brain injury by fusing her mind with AI, setting off a series of events that unravel the truth about his sinister past.
