Beyond the Studio: Writing a Great Artist Statement With Laurie Smithwick

It’s hard to write an artist statement that’s easy to read.
This workshop is designed to help artists write compelling and concise artist statements for grant and residency applications. Distilling the essence of one's work into a three paragraph statement can be challenging, but this workshop will provide guidance on how to effectively communicate the direction and principles behind the art. Participants will learn how to craft a clear and convincing narrative, using language that will captivate the audience's attention.
As a working artist who is also a writer, Laurie Smithwick understands the particular challenge of artist statements from both sides. She has helped many people over the years transform scattered thoughts into well-structured, compelling narratives.
Doors open at 5:30pm, talk starts at 6:00pm.
**Complimentary drink (beer, wine, sparkling water) included
About the Speaker:
Laurie Smithwick is an abstract painter, printmaker, muralist and public artist. She was born and raised in Charlotte, studied art and creative writing at Duke University, and graphic design and photography at Parsons School of Design. Laurie was the founder and creative director of LEAP Design, and is a partner in the Alt Summit creative conference. Her design work earned her a Grammy nomination, and she has delivered a TEDx talk on the genesis of ideas.
Laurie has exhibited throughout the US and the US Virgin Islands, taught printmaking and painting, and created murals and public art for many businesses and organizations, including Blumenthal Performing Arts, Novant Health, AARP, and the VAPA Center.
Her abstract art, steeped in formalism, uses color, texture, and composition to illuminate the human experience of transition and explore the world of possibility.
