About this Event
GOCA by Garde is pleased to present BEYOND THE ARCHETYPE, a group exhibition featuring works by Chié Shimizu, Sao Tanaka, and Seongmin Ahn. The exhibition takes historical and cultural “archetypes” as its point of departure, only to transcend their boundaries. Through a contemporary lens, the artists interrogate the underlying forces that shape human existence, collective identity, and our understanding of nature and nationhood.
Each artist begins within a deeply rooted tradition—Japanese Geidō and Noh theater, East Asian ink painting, and Korean Minhwa. Yet they approach these traditions not as static inheritances, but as living systems. Through sculpture and painting, the exhibition examines how identity shifts across culture, time, and geography.
Rather than rejecting tradition, the artists enter into dialogue with it, expanding its boundaries to reveal tensions between spiritual and physical, organic and artificial, East and West, past and present. Together, their works propose that archetypes are not fixed truths, but evolving frameworks. In transcending inherited forms, they redefine the nexus where tradition and modernity intersect.
