Join us in person for a conversation and sharing on what good bereavement care is needed for black families.
About this Event

Join us for a powerful and reflective event during Black Baby Loss Awareness Week, centred on improving bereavement care for Black African and Caribbean women and families.

Holding Her Space, in partnership with Saint Mary’s Hospital (Oxford Road), is leading a community-informed project to address the gaps in aftercare and cultural recognition following pregnancy and infant loss. This work is grounded in lived experience, bringing together voices from the community, healthcare professionals, and faith leaders to shape meaningful change.

Through ongoing workshops, national partnerships, and community engagement, we are developing practical solutions and a new Bereavement Care Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure families receive compassionate, culturally sensitive support when they need it most.

What to Expect

This free event will bring together community, clinicians, and leaders for an afternoon of reflection, conversation, shared experiences and connection.

Conversations through:

  • A short documentary screening capturing lived experiences of bereavement and aftercare
  • A panel discussion with bereaved mothers, clinicians, faith leaders, and community advocates
  • Open conversation exploring what good, culturally safe care should look like
  • The importance of therapy and what it looks like within our community
  • Time to connect and reflect over lunch and refreshments
  • Information and Therapies

Why This Matters

Black families continue to face disparities in maternity and bereavement care. Many experience a lack of acknowledgement, limited aftercare, and support that does not reflect their cultural or spiritual needs.

This event creates space to:

  • Centre lived experiences
  • Highlight gaps in current care
  • Build understanding between communities and healthcare providers
  • Contribute to real, lasting change in how bereavement care is delivered

Who Should Attend

This event is open to:

  • Black African and Caribbean women and families
  • Anyone interested in improving care and supporting change
  • Healthcare professionals (midwives, nurses, doctors)
  • Community and faith leaders
  • Organisations working in maternity, bereavement, or health equity

Our Commitment

We recognise that this topic is sensitive. This event will be delivered in a safe, respectful, and trauma-informed space, with support available throughout.
