Art Practice in Conflict
About this Event

Join us for a captivating event at the intersection of creative and spatial interdisciplinary art practices that cross multiple disciplinary boundaries . Hosted by Dr Sana Murrani, this event showcases a film screening of "The Soil and the Sea" by Professor Daniele Rugo. Explore the film at Soil and Sea Film.

The event is an opportunity to delve into the multifaceted realms of storytelling and violence expressed through practice-as-research in a conversation between Professor Rugo and Dr Murrani, both of whom are deeply immersed in research exploring the nexus of conflict and trauma in place and space, and their creative representations.

Professor Rugo, an award-winning filmmaker and Professor of Film at Brunel University London, brings his expertise in documenting social change and conflict. His acclaimed film, "About a War" (2019), co-directed with Abi Weaver, reveals the transformative power of narratives in understanding Lebanon’s civil war. Supported by research funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the British Academy, and the Global Challenges Research Fund, his work offers profound insights into the arts in conflict zones.

"The Soil and the Sea" is a powerful 75-minute documentary that unearths the hidden stories of violence from Lebanon's prolonged civil war. Through the voices of those who endured this traumatic period, the film presents a 30-year history of resilience and struggle.

This event promises to be an enlightening exploration of how art in research practice intersects in narrating conflicts.
