About this Event
Between Fire and Mourning:
A Night of Poetry at Slant of Light
Join us for an evening of raw, transformative, and brilliant verse as we welcome Chrissy Martin and Whitney Koo to celebrate the launch of their debut collections! The event will also feature readings from several local, Chicago poets.
Chrissy Martin | Whole, Holy, Hot
(Write Bloody Publishing)
Wielding theory in one hand and an espresso martini in the other, Martin captures a mind and body on fire. This collection refracts selfhood through pop culture, gender, and medical systems, balancing critical inquiry with camp, whimsy, and the "wild light" of humor. From formal verse to reality TV-inspired confessionals, Martin challenges depictions of disability to insist that every body is already whole, holy, and absolutely hot.
Whitney Koo | Any Gesture
(Black Lawrence Press)
Koo presents a braided, elegiac journey through the "little deaths" experienced between mourning and survival. Interrogating loss through the lens of a modern Ophelia, miscarriage, and the hauntings of grief, these poems pre-elegize what is lost and what remains. Any Gesture reinvents the elegy as a living, breathing force, inviting the reader to stand as both witness and mourner in the face of a "long, drawn sucker punch."
