About this Event
Berlinguer – The Great Ambition
Italian film screening with English subtitles
A powerful political drama exploring the life, vision, and contradictions of one of the most influential figures in modern Italian history.
Berlinguer – The Great Ambition is one of the most celebrated Italian films of 2024, an intense and deeply human portrait of Enrico Berlinguer, the historic leader of the Italian Communist Party (PCI), and of a country suspended between hope, conflict, and transformation.
Directed by Andrea Segre and featuring an extraordinary performance by Elio Germano, the film follows the years between 1973 and 1978, when Berlinguer and the PCI attempted to overcome Cold War divisions and open a new political dialogue with the Christian Democrats through the “Historic Compromise”.
Screened in Italian with English subtitles, the evening will include an introduction in English by Dr Silvana Serra (PhD in Film Studies) and a post-screening Q&A, creating space for discussion between the Italian and British communities around cinema, politics, and collective memory.
