At the Forsyth Tavern: May 2ndLong before the first stone of the Forsyth Tavern was laid, the ancestors of the Scottish Highlands watched the mountain peaks for a glimmer of orange light. This was the Tein-eigen, the "Need-Fire", the sacred flame of Beltane.
As the wheel of the year turned toward summer, every hearth in the village was extinguished. For one night, the community stood together in the darkness, waiting for a single new spark to be struck. This flame represented more than just warmth; it was a powerful "cleansing" for the cattle and the kin, a bright barrier against the shadows of winter, and an invitation to the sun to return in full glory.
When our bonfire roars to life this May 2nd, we aren’t just lighting a fire, we are keeping an ancient promise. We gather to burn away the old year, to bless our herds and our harvests, and to relight the "hearths" of our community for the bright season ahead.
Come for the fleece, stay for the flame.
