Join us at Hackney Museum for a panel discussion with women photographers on capturing Hackney through a lens.
Spanning 50 years, attendees will hear from innovative and ground-breaking women who have recorded Hackney's changing landscape and communities with a camera. The photographers will also discuess how they have forged their careers in the creative industry. Hear their insights and ask your own questions in the follow-up Q&A.
Speaker One: Micheal Ann Mullen of the Hackney Flashers
Michael was part of Hackney Flashers, a photography collective who were active in the borough from 1974-1980. During this time, they used their craft to raise awareness for the difficulties facing women, from equal work to child care. Images from their 1978 series, Who's Holding the Baby, is featured in At Home in Hackney.
Speaker Two: Donna Travis of Future Hackney
Donna Travis is part of Future Hackney, a social non-profit organisation that seeks to record Hackney's present day communities and urban heritage. As well as featuring in At Home in Hackney, Future Hackney's work is displayed in street exhibition's around the borough (Richmond Road) and currently at Sutton House.
Speaker Three: Connie Swift
An up-and-coming photographer who submitted her work to the At Home in Hackney young photographers call out. Connie photographed her friends on nights out and mornings after in Hackney - four of these photographs are featuerd in the exhibition and has been shown by the Museum of Youth Culture. Connie is now working with Don Travis of Future Hackney on projects exploring Hackney's nightlife and has work exhibited in Sutton House.
