CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Foundations in Acting is a taster Short Acting Course for new-comers to acting beginners level actors or for people who are new to the technique we teach at the studio, Beck Emotional Access Technique (BEAT).

WHAT IS BEAT?
BEATTM is a fully developed, dynamic and integrated approach to training actors that feels more like a spiritual awakening rather than a method of acting. BEATTM actors are able to ‘enter’ character instinctively. This is after-all the goal of the technique. BEATTM actors are trained to feel, think, move, sound and feel like the character they seek to embody. In brief:

- A method of access helping you access truthful emotions
- A practical method getting you on your feet from Day 1

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
- Introduction to Beck Emotional Access Technique (BEAT)
- A brief look at BEAT & the Meisner Technique
- BEAT Repetition: access powerful emotions directly
- Scene Study: Powerful techniques to help you access your emotions easily for text and script work
- On camera work: the first steps

Each week students will work through acting exercises encouraging them to progressively step out of their comfort zone.

Through the cornerstone exercise of the Repetition Exercise students learn how to connect with their emotional instrument as well as with the other actor.
The course will encourage and train students to delve into their own emotional experiences.

“You need these skills to succeed as an actor!”

The skills you will begin to learn in Foundations are necessary for giving powerful, truthful and memorable performances on screen and stage.

COURSE OUTCOME
The course introduces new and working actors to Beck Emotional Access Technique. Students who successfully complete Foundations are eligible to join long term courses at the Studio.

WHY TAKE THE SHORT COURSE:
If you take the course, you will learn practical acting skills that you can begin to apply almost immediately to your acting – as well as in your everyday life.

In addition to the practical hands-on skills you will learn, the course offers students a unique opportunity to meet and work with like-minded actors. Through the Foundations short course, you will also get the opportunity to join the vibrant, ever growing, but select community of actors attending the Actors Door Studio.

The relationships you build during the course will stay with you well after the course is finished.

PREPARE YOURSELF TO BE CHALLENGED!
The Beck Emotional Access Technique (BEAT) is a full method acting training program designed for people who want to pursue acting professionally. It has been developed on the basis of the Meisner Technique but differs from it in scope. BEAT is designed to be a practical way to reach deep and intense emotions. To do this technique, you need to be open, willing and prepared to access and share those emotions with others.

If you are an aspiring actor, or you are a trained actor new BEAT this course is for you! It is also ideal for anyone interested in exploring their emotional world for reasons of creative or artistic expression. Regardless of your interest, be prepared to be challenged! In each acting class you will be challenged; progressively invited to venture outside of your comfort zone. You need to allow yourself to embrace the technique with an open mind and open heart. If you do, the technique has the power to really transform you not only as an actor, but also as an individual.

All welcome, you don’t need to have any previous experience in acting. In fact the less experience the better!

WHY STUDY IT HERE:
Acting classes at the Actors Door Studio are unique. They run as mini workshops giving students the opportunity to progressively test their boundaries and take themselves out of their comfort zone. Students progress at their own pace and in line with their individual strengths and weaknesses. Instructors continuously encourage and provide the support for students to challenge themselves further, each session.

Training at the Actors Door Studio is different; through Fay Beck’s development of the Meisner Technique, the training at ADS focuses on creating actors with the flexibility to ‘wear’ character as if they wear another skin. BEAT actors are emotionally nimble; like elite athletes they are able to move through emotional landscapes dynamically, taking the audience with them on memorable journeys.

Our other point of difference is our insistence on quality as opposed to quantity. We purposely keep class numbers small so students can take maximum benefit from the teacher’s specialist instruction.

FOUNDATIONS IN ACTING: LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Gained an appreciation of the BEAT as a ‘method’ approach to acting.
- Learnt to connect with your instinctive & emotional self.
- Learnt how to connect with the ‘other actor’ effectively.
- Improved self-confidence
- Learnt to recognise those and ’embraced’ key personal defences
