ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
As part of the artists-run workshops at Geary Art Crawl happening this March 7 and 8.
A beginner-friendly, hands-on workshop introducing participants to the powerful Afro-Brazilian rhythms of maracatu through learning traditional percussion techniques in an inclusive, community-focused environment led by Maracatu Mar Aberto. All Instruments are provided, and no prior experience is neccessary.
This worskhop is facilitated by Maracatu Mar Aberto.

ABOUT THE ARTIST ORGANIZATION
Maracatu Mar Aberto is a Toronto-based community percussion group playing maracatu de baque virado and other rhythms derived from the traditions of northeastern Brazil. Translated to English as the Open Sea, the name represents the aggregated influences that have traveled from Africa to Brazil to Toronto and beyond. Founded in 2010, the group has played on streets and stages across Ontario and Quebec bringing rhythm, song and movement. A living tradition of Afro-Brazilian rhythm in a local context, working collectively on the artistry and heritage that is maracatu de baque virado.
ABOUT GEARY ART CRAWL
Geary Art Crawl is a free, community-driven arts festival that animates Toronto’s Geary Avenue with interdisciplinary programming, creative workshops, and live cultural experiences.
Founded in 2021 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, an d the changing face of our beloved street, the festival was created to safely reconnect the community, provide paid opportunities for artists and arts workers, and support the neighbourhood’s small businesses during a period of significant disruption.
Since its inception, Geary Art Crawl has grown into an annual celebration of the corridor’s vibrant creative ecosystem, activating studios, galleries, and industrial spaces while welcoming thousands of visitors to explore the area.
Through workshops, performances, and collaborative projects, the festival highlights diverse artistic voices and fosters meaningful community engagement in shared public space.
