Curious about bees? Come and join the Shakers’ beekeeper, Paul Gillis, as he introduces you to the basics of beekeeping! Beehives require management and good stewardship, which take both time and knowledge — so start your journey with us!
Learn the parts of the hive, ask all your bee questions, and see the hive in action. After participants get suited up in their bee safety gear (we will provide), Paul will open up the hive for a live demonstration.
Get familiar with all the equipment and set-up needed to be around the bees in an easy learning environment. Paul will connect you with local resources if you are interested in continuing your journey with bees.
Brother Delmer kept honey bees at Chosen Land (Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village) until the early 1960’s to help the apple orchard. Honey bees returned circa 2007 under Paul’s volunteer care and are important for pollination of the herb and veggie gardens, apple trees, and flowers. Their honey is used in cooking and is sold at the Shaker Store and The Honey Exchange when available.
Long sleeves, pants, and closed toed shoes are required. Beekeeper’s jacket, veil, & gloves will be provided for class use.
Paul began keeping honey bees in Iowa in 1979. The adventures continued in Pennsylvania and all the way to Maine in Farmington, New Gloucester, and Poland.
Maximum participants: 6
Perfect for beginners and those interested in starting beekeeping. All levels welcome. This is also an up-close and intimate way to see the bee workings at Shaker Village.
This event is rain or shine but may be rescheduled or cancelled due to heavy rain and/or wind. We want to keep our bees safe.
