Beating the Bounds is an ancient Anglo-Saxon custom, still observed in some English parishes, where community members walk the parish boundary, usually on Rogation Sunday.
Rogation is an ancient church festival to seek blessing for a community and its sustenance. Beating the Bounds was traditionally used to teach younger generations the precise, undocumented boundary lines of their parish. It was also used to reinforce a place, hear local stories and why the boundary is there, and to celebrate the earth and changing seasons.
Tackling this clockwise we turn left along the canal tow-path before heading through The Heavens - you get the "hard" climbing done early through some of the most beautiful woodland in the Stroud valleys, then enjoy the high-level views before a gentle descent.
