About this Event

[ESP]

The Master in Digital Arts and Creative Programming is once again joining forces with the Creative Coding Barcelona collective for an extraordinary BAU Talks event. The event will take advantage of the guest's visit to the BAU programme. “Making is Exploring: Building in Nature to Discover the Non-Human World” is a discussion with Dr Andy Quitmeyer, who will talk about how the desire to create involves exploration and defend the idea of “building in nature to discover the non-human world”.

As the guest rightly points out, exploration often means going outside. Dr Andy Quitmeyer creates tools for interacting with nature. Literally. He has a makerspace in the middle of the Panamanian jungle, where he builds tools designed to help field biologists research their environment more effectively.

He openly shares everything he does, holding nothing back. He also promoted an international conference called the Digital Naturalism Conference, which brings creative people together in unique natural environments to explore, experiment, and share the projects they are developing.

At its core is a very clear and simple idea: we should play outside more. And while we're at it, maybe technology should come out and play with us, too.

About the artist

Andy Quitmeyer designs new ways of interacting with the natural world. He has worked with major organisations such as Cartoon Network, IDEO and the Smithsonian Institution. He has also been a teacher and his research even became a somewhat crazy television series called Hacking the Wild, distributed by Discovery.

He spends most of his time volunteering with small organisations and communities and has recently founded the Digital Naturalism Laboratories makerspace. Based in Gamboa rainforest in Panama, this organisation brings together biological fieldwork and technological craftsmanship, working with a community of local and international scientists, artists and engineers.
