About this Event
Welcome to North York Reading Group! The group is established with the purpose to facilitate discussion on readings about society, history, environment, humanity and philosophy.
This time our book title is Guy Standing's Basic Income. With the subtitle "And how we can make it happen", you shall be aware that Standing is advocating not just the desirability of basic income, and also its feasibility. Basic income is a concept which often dismissed immediately with the belief that it is impossible or will only drive negative behavior. Are these just myths of this terminology or such rejection has sufficient ground? With this book by Standing, we will investigate together the ideology behind such concept as well as the practical difficulties (and their corresponding solutions).
We will have two sessions to cover first half and second half of the book respectively. Each session will start with first half hour giving a brief introduction to the corresponding half, and then a discussion on any comment / question / insight related to the ideas raised in the book. This will be a relaxed one and a half hour session without any prerequisite to join.
