An old promenade bylaw dating back to 1935 β banning carpet beating β is expected to be formally repealed at full council on Monday 16 March 2026.
So, on the Sunday before, people are invited to gather informally on the promenade to mark the end of an era in the most appropriate way possible.
By giving a rug a gentle (or enthusiastic) bash.
Legally (almost).
Bash Yer Rug is a peaceful, light-hearted civic gathering.
It is not a protest, not a demonstration, and not an organised event β just a joyful moment where people can come together in public space to share a bit of seaside silliness and say farewell to a very old rule.
What you might see:
π§Ί Rugs being cheerfully beaten
πΊ Brass instruments being joyfully played by those who choose to bring them
π΄ββ οΈ The occasional pirate-themed surprise
π Smiles, laughter, and community spirit
Thereβs no programme, no stage, no formal organisation β just people turning up, taking part if they wish, or watching and enjoying the moment.
Bring a rug.
Bring a trumpet.
Or just bring yourself.
This gathering is intended in the spirit of celebration and good humour, marking the anticipated repeal of a historic bylaw the following day.
Bylaws be bylaws.
Come celebrate the end of an era.
More details may follow β depending on how much council time this final piece of civic housekeeping takes up.
