In Béla, the choreographers Claire Croizé and Etienne Guilloteau (ECCE) tackle Béla Bartók’s Sonata for two pianos and percussion – an explosive, virtuoso piece full of surging, jumpy rhythms and unusual sound colours. An enigmatic, slow movement brings tranquillity as well. In fragmented motifs and airy sounds, Bartók evokes the night: not a silent landscape but an outside world full of life. It is this highly person interpretation of the nocturne that has inspired ECCE to approach nature in a new way: one in which nature is no longer a source of contemplation or exploitation but a dynamic space where all beings who live on Earth come together, a place writhing with gestures and sounds. Five dancers encounter four musicians from Ictus in a thrilling performance.
