About this Event

Dates: 12th & 13th December 2022, 16th & 17th January 2023

Liberata Collective is running an intensive four-day course for singers taught by historical acting specialist Dionysios Kyropoulos. Dionysios is an opera director, researcher and coach teaching historical acting at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. This course will be based on teaching techniques he developed over a decade of research and practice.

Tuition will be divided into two parts, delivered a month apart to allow time for assimilating the theory and putting it into practice. Between the two parts, each active participant will be offered a 60-minute individual online session with Dionysios to review their progress, ask questions, and receive coaching on a 17th- or 18th-century operatic aria of their choice.

What will I learn?

a wide range of acting skills specifically designed for singers, with a particular focus on Baroque gesture & acting for 17th- and 18th-century vocal repertoire.

After the course I will...

have a good understanding of the principles of historical acting, a working knowledge of many techniques for movement, gesture & characterisation, as well as strategies & learning material for independently continuing the development of the newly acquired skills.

What level do I need to be?

The course is aimed at classical singers (intermediate to advance level) with solo performance experience. Admission is by application, reviewed on a rolling basis, and enrolment will be limited to 10 active participants. The in-person classes will be open to an observing audience, with up to 15 places offered to non-active participants for whom no performing experience or prior knowledge is necessary.

What do I need to do before the course? What repertoire can I bring?

Please prepare one aria from the 17th or 18th century, by memory if possible (active participants only)

What will happen each day?

The classes will combine lectures, group workshops & individual instruction. In-person classes will take place between 10am and 5pm, with an hour-long lunch break & coffee breaks in the morning and afternoon. Coffee & biscuits will be provided, but please bring your own lunch.
