Join us for the opening reception of "Barkcloth: A Living Canvas," a unique public exhibition exploring Lubugo, a traditional Ugandan barkcloth, through wearable art, cultural storytelling, and contemporary visual installation.Opening Friday, May 1, the reception will include free admission, an artist talk, and extended hours until 7 PM as part of First Fridays.
The exhibition features barkcloth garments created by Stella Atal and is curated by Sarah Ndagire in collaboration with AfriWell Hub and DuMA. Visitors will also experience a looping video installation exploring the harvesting, preparation, and transformation of barkcloth alongside its layered cultural meaning.
Made from the inner bark of the mutuba tree, Lubugo carries deep cultural, spiritual, and ecological significance in Uganda. Through this exhibition, it is reimagined as a living canvas for memory, identity, and creative expression.
Support for this work is provided by Big Field Fund, a program of Public Space One. Funding is provided by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
Free admission | 4-7 PM (free admission all day starting at 10 AM)
