In Bali, cultural practices, religion and performance are all part of one unity. Masks in this context are magic objects that help performers make contact and contain animate forces within the ritual space. So, what can these sacred objects from such a distant culture reveal to us? In what ways are they relevant to our performative spaces and theatrical practices? During this workshop we will explore ways to make these masks come alive and help us see something about our common human experience. We will prepare the body and soul for an encounter with a deep source of mystery, of shape shifting Otherness.
In all traditions across the world, masks are object of initiation into craft, form, into transposition of the ineffable. In other words into art making. Also, both in Bali and in European traditions, half masks open for us the space of comedy. They reveal to us the deep hunger that lies beneath our earthly drives and appetites.
So we will be stepping into the realm of physical comedy: a fine art that demands embodied skills and craft: playfulness and ability to improvise, a sensitivity towards breath, rhythm and comic timing, acute spatial awareness, listening of the inner impulses and openness to the interplay of characters and their conflicting drives.
