Update to Baldwin's debate at Cambridge university 1965 linking US /Black British Civil Rights and the fight for positive imageryJames Baldwin fought for equality on both sides of the Atlantic. At Cambridge University in 1965 he debated the right wing William Buckley . The title "The American Dream is at the expense of the American Negro." Baldwin argued that the American Dream was indeed at the expense of African Americans, while Buckley countered that the American Dream was available to all, regardless of race.
The debate was explosive and a significant moment in British- American history, as it highlighted the deep-seated racial tensions and inequalities that existed in the US and UK at the time.1965 was the first time Black people in Britain had any legal protection against racism despite being here for hundreds of years
