LIMITED ENGAGEMENT “Shhhhh. Keep quiet. Be seen not heard. Whatever you have to say is not worth the space it takes up.”
These are the first words you’ll hear when the lights go down.
Those are the first words you’ll hear when the lights go down.
What follows is "Silence Unraveled" — a world premiere one-woman performance by Jacksonville playwright and performer Bobbie O’Connor that traces four generations of women in her family and the misogyny that shaped each of their lives across more than 150 years.
Her great-grandmother Emma Jane. Her grandmother Trudie. Her mother Willie Audrey. And Bobbie herself.
Each woman learned, in her own way, to be quiet. To take up less space. To swallow what was true. O’Connor inhabits each of them in turn — their voices, their fury, their tenderness, their survival — and in doing so, refuses to pass the silence on.
Dramaturge and director Barbara Colaciello states, “This is essential theatre — a story that needs to be heard across generations and genders to fully understand the complexity of misogyny.”
"Silence Unraveled" is raw, specific, and unexpectedly funny. It is a story about inheritance: what we receive from the women who came before us, what we choose to keep, and what we finally set down.
It ends with a declaration.
