A Squawk and a Sparrow: A one act thriller
Written By Sarah Bohan Ashton
Directed by Emmett Robinson
Characters:
Bella:
The main character, in her early 30s. She first appears as stable and good-natured but we later see her as she really is - unstable and depressed, seeking revenge. She is a strong personality but needs to be played with absolute realism. She appears in person but in the last scene she is in her imaginary world for a while with pre-recorded dialogue.
Rob Sparrow:
Bella’s husband is also in his early 30s. He is a good-natured family man and spends quite a bit of time darting into his toddler’s playhouse. In the final scene his dialogue is pre-recorded.
Tommy:
Bella and Rob’s son is 11. This could be played by a teenager who looks young, but preferably someone younger than 16. He is lively and spoiled, used to having too much attention and too many presents and loves his VR headset. In the final scene his dialogue is pre-recorded.
Lisa:
Bella’s sister is a couple of years older so should be no older than mid thirties. She is sensible, warm and concerned for Bella’s well-being.
Emily:
Lisa’s partner who is early to mid thirties. She is calm and friendly and appears in one scene. She tries to be accepted by Bella who is a little resistant.

Intrusive Thoughts
Written by Jerib Robertson
Directed by Jerib Robertson and James R Howey
A sharp, darkly funny character piece exploring the chaotic tug-of-war between optimism, anxiety, impulse, and obsession.
Characters:
Terrance:
The heart of the story.
Socially awkward, indecisive, and painfully uncomfortable in his own skin. Terrance overthinks everything, struggles in conversation, and constantly battles the noise inside his head.
Playing age: 30s to 40s
Gender: Male
Notes: Looking for strong comedic timing paired with emotional depth.
Light:
The optimistic voice inside Terrance’s mind.
Encouraging, upbeat, enthusiastic, and relentlessly positive, even when things are falling apart.
Gender: Any
Notes: High energy and expressive presence encouraged.
Dark:
The pessimistic voice inside Terrance’s mind.
Sharp-tongued, impulsive, sarcastic, and brutally honest. Dark thrives on chaos and self-sabotage.
Gender: Any
Notes: Strong comic delivery and confident stage presence ideal.
Barista
The object of Terrance’s fascination.
Warm, approachable, bubbly, and effortlessly charming without trying to be.
Playing age: 20s to 30s
Gender: Female

Nine monologues from The World’s Wife
by Carol Ann Duffy
Directed by Christina Stachurski
Dame Carol Ann Duffy was appointed Britain's Poet Laureate in May 2009, the first woman and the first Scot.
The World’s Wife has been hugely successful worldwide. Duffy explains: "I wanted to use history and myth and popular culture and elements from cinema and literature, but also to anchor it in a deeply personal soil and make an entertainment."
“Certainly, her subversion of history is a far cry from the earnest "herstory" that is usually associated with such enterprises. It sparkles with wit, intelligence and an impressive lightness of touch, while drawing on some weighty emotional experiences: loneliness, jealousy, self-loathing, desire, the fierceness of a mother's love.”
Nine characters from The World’s Wife feature in the Stubbies’ production.
Little Red-Cap
Elvis’ Twin Sister
Mrs Midas
Mrs Tiresias
Mrs Aesop
Mrs Darwin
Anne Hathaway
Queen Kong
Medusa
Mrs Lazarus
Mrs Rip van Winkle
Mrs Icarus
Frau Freud
Salome
The Kray Sisters
Pope Joan

The Billboard
Written and Directed by Barry Grant
Characters:
Chris:
Female age 30 to 60. A very pleasant art teacher, very good artistically. Prefers not to have to make decisions. Accommodating, popular, likes to be one of the boys, hopeless at keeping secrets. Quite capable of taking both sides in an argument. Can be talked into anything.
Les:
Age 30 to 60. Male History teacher. Against the war but mostly keeps that to himself. Intelligent. Worried by Collegiate's wholehearted excessive participation in the European war. Ready if necessary to defend this position in an argument.
Rob:
Male, age 30 to 60, Maths Teacher. Ostensibly fully behind Collegiate's position on supplying young troops to fight in the European War, but reverses this position when the numbers are against him.
Soldier:
Must look 16 but not much older. Dead and rigid, mechanical. Argues his position that young soldiers know little about politics or warfare, such as why they are fighting against unlikely enemies far from home. "There's not to wonder why, there's but to do and die."
