Heart LinesWritten and directed by Kerry Bowden
Synopsis
Heart Lines centres around the lives of two youths involved in a heart transplant; one the heart recipient, the other the heart donor. Noah is a nineteen- year- old carpenter who has a degenerative heart condition. Noah’s life can only be saved by undergoing heart transplant surgery. Before his heart started to fail, he was active, creative and enjoyed surfing.
Approximately four years after his successful heart transplant, Noah now twenty- three, decides to make a video of himself in the hope that it may one day be viewed by the family of his heart donor. Through a series of monologues, Noah discusses the emotional challenges of having a failing heart, his transplant surgery and his second chance at life with his new heart. He expresses his gratitude to the family and his profound longing to find out who his donor was. Aspects of Noah’s life also unfold through the eyes of his best friend, Pete.
Interspersed between Noah’s monologues, are vignettes of James, Tim, Anna and Jacob. Their lives as fun loving and carefree university students are starkly contrasted with Noah’s increasingly diminished health and limited lifestyle.
Heart Lines is a play that challenges audiences to think about what it is to be human and the connectivity that exists between one person and another.
